Meryl Streep and Martin Short are staying close at the 2024 Emmy Awards.
Streep, 75, sat by her longtime friend Short’s side at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, Sept. 15, during the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, at which the pair’s show Only Murders in the Building received nominations in eight different categories.
The pair’s outing together at the annual awards ceremony comes months after representatives for Short, 74, shut down rumors regarding the nature of his relationship with Streep after the pair appeared particularly close at the 2024 Golden Globes in January.
At that time, a rep for Short told PEOPLE at the time that the pair are “just very good friends, nothing more.” Short later dismissed those rumors on Bill Maher’s podcast that same month, as he said the two costars are “not a couple, we are just very close friends.”
In May, Short addressed the interest in his relationship with Streep — who PEOPLE confirmed in October had separated from her husband of 45 years, Don Gummer, six years ago: “It’s always interesting. Show business relationships and spec.”

Short and his Only Murders costar Steve Martin were each up for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series on Sunday. Streep also received a nomination in the supporting actress category for her role in the series; Selena Gomez, Paul Rudd, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Matthew Broderick were among the other acting nominees from the hit Hulu series.
Though Streep and Short have denied they are in a romantic relationship, the pair were seen holding hands at an afterparty for the series’ season 4 premiere afterparty in Los Angeles on Aug. 22. Even then, a source told PEOPLE that the pair are “just friends.”
That same day, The Hollywood Reporter also published an interview with Short, in which the outlet reported Short stated he and Streep are “friends” when asked about the state of their relationship.
