ALEXANDRIA, Va. (DC News Now) — Are you looking for a “curious and spirited boy who is always up for sniffing out new adventures?” If so, adoptable Dash is waiting for you at the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA).
The shelter said sweet and playful Dash has been waiting for a forever home for almost 400 days.
“More than ONE WHOLE YEAR IN THE SHELTER,” AWLA stated in a Facebook post. “Please help us find him the right family.”
Dash can be a little nervous at first but it’s all over when he gets to know you. His playful nature will drag anyone into a game of tug, AWLA said.
The 6-year-old boy is crate-trained and clicker-trained and has learned how to sit, shake and check in with his people. He even walks “beautifully” on a leash.
AWLA said Dash is a “great dog” and just needs the right environment where he can thrive.
Dash needs to be in a home where he is the only dog because of his reactiveness. He would likely also be better in a home where there are older kids or no kids at all.
Due to his dog-reactivity, he would not thrive in an apartment, condominium or townhouse where he would frequently run into other dogs. AWLA believes Dash would be the happiest in a single-family home.
But don’t let that stop you because AWLA said Dash’s reactivity can be managed and that the shelter’s Behavior and Training Team has been actively working with him to reduce it.
Dash’s new family will also continue to receive support from the shelter’s training team along with a year’s supply of free food, a shopping spree at Pampered Pet Boutique Barkery, a $250 gift card to Sniffspots (private dog parks allowing Dash to play) and a behavior modification coaching package with a positive reinforcement dog trainer in the area.
His adoption fee has also been waived.
