(NewsNation) — The Texas Department of State Health Services has reported 146 measles cases in the outbreak in the South Plains region of Texas.
This marks 22 additional confirmed cases since Tuesday, when the health department reported 124 cases. Most of the cases are in Gaines County, where the outbreak first started.
Approximately 20 people have been hospitalized, and officials say most cases are in children between the ages of 5 and 17.
Many cases have been in patients who were not vaccinated against measles or had an unknown vaccination status. Five people with measles say they were vaccinated.
The update comes after Texas announced its first death in the outbreak: an unvaccinated, school-aged child who was hospitalized in Lubbock.
It is the first death from measles in the U.S. in a decade.
