Mayor Brandon Johnson will testify before Congress next month as part of a Republican-led House probe into sanctuary cities, his office announced Wednesday.
Oversight Committee chair U.S. Rep James Comer, R-Ky., opened an investigation into four liberal cities, including Chicago, last month and requested the mayors appear in a hearing over what he described as “their misguided and obstructionist policies” blocking local police from immigration enforcement.
For the past week Johnson and his corporation counsel have demurred on whether he would accept, citing legal review, but his office confirmed he will testify on March 5.
“Mayor Johnson will travel to Washington, D.C. to participate in the House Oversight Committee’s hearing on March 5, 2025,” the mayor’s office wrote in its statement. “We thank Committee members for the upcoming conversation on this important issue, and for the opportunity for Mayor Johnson to represent Chicago alongside Mayors from Boston, Denver, and New York.”
Citing the “reckless policies in Democrat-run cities,” Comer in a statement Wednesday pledged to “press these mayors for answers and examine measures to enforce compliance with federal immigration law.”
This is a developing story.
