A massive fight broke out in the stands late at Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis on Tuesday night.
While it’s unclear what happened to lead to the brawl, which took a very long time to sort out, things turned very chaotic near the end of Saint Louis’ 78-69 win over VCU.
With just 70 seconds left on the clock and both teams at their respective huddles during a timeout during the A-10 matchup, a brawl erupted behind the Rams’ bench. It appeared as if more than a dozen people were swallowed up by the incident, which prompted a long delay.
By the time it was sorted out, security and officials had been seen walking several people out of the arena.
The Billikens surged ahead in the final minutes to grab the nine-point win over VCU. Gibson Jimerson led the team with 26 points and five rebounds, and Kobe Johnson added 19 points and six rebounds. The win pushed them to 13-8 on the season and to 6-2 in conference play.
Phillip Russell led VCU with 15 points and two assists after shooting 1-of-7 from the 3-point line. Zeb Jackson added 15 points off the bench, and Max Shulga finished with 14 points. The loss snapped a six-game win streak for the Rams, who now trail George Mason by half of a game at the top of the conference standings.
The matchup was the second between the two programs this season, so they wouldn’t meet again until a potential tournament matchup in the conference tournament in March. Thankfully, based on how the two fan bases clashed on Tuesday night, that game would be held on a neutral floor.
