PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — Maryland Governor Wes Moore announced on Monday his endorsement in the Prince George’s County Executive special election.
Moore gave his support to State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy, who is running against candidates including Rushern Baker, Councilmember Calvin Hawkins (D) and more.
County Council Chair Jolene Ivey (D) dropped out of the race last week.
“As Governor, I have had the privilege of working together with Aisha Braveboy and I have seen her leadership up close, and she will be a fantastic partner in our shared mission of making Maryland and Prince George’s County safer, more affordable, and more competitive,” Moore stated. “The combination of her public and private-sector experience, her track record of delivering results in office, and her forward-facing vision to lead as the next County Executive is what inspired my decision.”
“Prince George’s County will have full alignment between the county and the state as we fulfill our shared objective of delivering pathways to work, wages, and wealth to the people of Prince George’s County,” he continued.
Moore said while Braveboy has served as State’s Attorney, her office has secured an over 90% conviction rate for homicides.
While in the state legislature, he noted that she expanded workers’ rights, fought against predatory lending practices and increased access for Minority Business Enterprises.
The special election for County Executive was kickstarted following Angela Alsobrooks’s (D-Md.) election into the U.S. Senate last November. Alsobrooks endorsed Hawkins for her old seat last month, as reported by The Washington Post.
The special primary election will be on March 4, 2025.
The special general election will be on May 27, 2025.
