Martin Freeman (The Responder), Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games) Malin Akerman (Watchmen), Jess Weixler (Monsters), Craig Roberts (Submarine) have been confirmed in the cast of Jamie Adams‘ Let’s Love as shooting is underway in Wales.
Written by Adams, with contributions from the cast, the improvised comedy is filming across Cardiff, the Brecon Beacons, Porthcrawl and at Dragon Studios in Bridgend. Postproduction be completed by early 2025.
The relationship comedy is produced by Bristol-based Happy Hour Productions and Manchester-based Boudica Entertainment in association with Principal Film Finance. Further cast members include Chloe Jouannet and Richard Elis.
Freeman co-stars as screenwriter Nigel alongside Akerman as film director Andrea, Hutcherson as her lead actor husband Jackson and Weixler as his on-screen romantic lead Jess. The quartet reunite in Wales for a 10-year anniversary fan convention of their last hit film, only to discover the hapless studio rep has booked the wrong month.
Full of disappointment, and with the weekend now all to themselves, they’re given a slim consolation prize… an opportunity to pitch a sequel idea early the next week, which leaves them with just days to conjure some inspiration for a career saving follow up.
In search of inspiration, they wander the Welsh countryside, unintentionally migrating back to the location of their cult historic film, where they are forced to explore their own anxieties, aspirations, agendas and fractured relationships.
“This is a relationship comedy at its core, albeit it’s also a fish out of water story that sees these hapless film professionals kind of marooned in the middle of the Welsh mountains as they are forced to examine their own lives whilst struggling to stay focused on the job in hand. We are throwing these amazing actors into some fun situations, and it’s fascinating viewing seeing the results,” said producer Tom George at Happy Hour.
Adams is known for his improvisational style as a director with many of his features shot on location and often over relatively short periods of time.
Recent titles include struggling rock band tale Love Spreads with Alia Shawkat and She is Love, starring Haley Bennett, Sam Riley and Marisa Abela, which filmed over a week in Cornwall at the height of the Covid pandemic.
“Let’s Love is truly one of the greatest film making experiences of my life, the whole troupe involved in the collaboration gave it their all, so grateful to our producers for making it happen. Indie film making is alive and well, especially when legends such as Martin Freeman, Josh Hutcherson, Malin Akerman and Jess Weixler get involved. Diolch yn fawr (thank you very much),” said Adams.
“The unique opportunity to produce a feature film that is shot in director Jamie Adams’ original style and with his pace of working, where dialogue is predominantly improvised by an incredible cast is thrilling,” said producer Rebecca Long at Boudica Entertainment.
Martin Freeman said, “Working with Jamie Adams on Let’s Love is truly a joy. I would happily do it all over again, no problem. We couldn’t have been luckier than with the cast we got together, either.”
World rights are currently available as the producers’ open discussions with distribution partners.
