Married At First Sight groom Tyson Gordon has broken his silence following weeks of intense backlash, admitting he regrets some of the controversial comments that made him one of the most talked-about villains of the season.

The outspoken participant sparked outrage among viewers after repeatedly saying he wanted a ‘submissive’ woman and clashing with several cast members during his short-lived marriage to Stephanie Marshall.

His comments ignited fierce debate online, with many viewers accusing him of misogyny and calling for him to be removed from the show.

Now Tyson has addressed the fallout in a candid interview with Daily Mail, admitting he cringed watching his own behaviour back on television.

‘Look, a lot of mixed emotions quite frankly,’ he said. ‘I feel like I took things a little bit too far with some of the things I said.

‘With the word ‘submissive’, I just wish I never said it because I look like an idiot on the show. I’m even watching it saying, ‘geez, I’ve got to punch this guy… oh wait, that’s me.’

‘I should have said traditional’

Tyson became one of the season’s most polarising grooms after repeatedly speaking about traditional gender roles and saying he wanted a submissive partner.

The remarks quickly set social media alight, with thousands of viewers criticising the groom’s views.

But Tyson now insists his comments were misunderstood.

‘The word I should have used was traditional,’ he said.

‘I don’t want a subservient woman. I don’t want a dog.

‘I just want a traditional woman with good values and someone who wants to raise a family.’

‘From the get-go, I knew I was going to be the villain,’ he said.

‘The producers told me I was going to be one of the most controversial characters they’ve ever had.

‘So when someone tells you that, you go along with it.’

However, Tyson admitted the reaction from viewers has been far more intense than he expected.

‘I didn’t realise it was going to go this far,’ he said.

‘If I had my time again, I would do things very differently.’

The groom said watching the show back has been confronting, particularly scenes from the honeymoon that sparked widespread criticism.

‘The honeymoon episode was rough,’ he admitted.

‘I watched it and thought, wow… I came across very arrogant.

‘I didn’t like the way I portrayed myself at all.’

Tyson also claimed the show failed to air positive moments between himself and his on-screen wife Stephanie.

‘We actually had some good times,’ he said.

‘We went horse riding, went to the beach, had dinners together.

‘But they didn’t show any of that.’

‘I’ve been getting threats’

‘The comments are out of control,’ he said.

‘I’ve got people messaging me three times a day saying they’re going to cut my hands off.’

The groom admitted he now tries to keep a low profile when out in public.

‘Even at the airport I’ve got to wear a hat and glasses,’ he said.

‘It’s not a life to live.’

‘I’m not the big bad wolf’

Despite the controversy, Tyson insists viewers have only seen a small snapshot of who he really is.

‘I know people think I’m this big bad wolf,’ he said.

‘But you’ve only seen this much of my life.

‘I’m actually a nice person regardless of what people think.’

And despite the fallout from the show, Tyson says he still hopes to eventually find love.

‘I went on the show because I genuinely wanted to meet someone and start a family,’ he said.

‘It just didn’t work out the way I hoped.’
