Married At First Sight’s Awhina Rutene has spoken out about the moment her groom Adrian Araouzou admitted he wasn’t on board with the fact that she had a child.
‘I don’t know if I can love my kids as much as your kid,’ he told mother-of-one Awhina during Thursday night’s episode.
Recalling the confronting moment on their honeymoon, Awhina, 30, shared her first reaction when Adrian dropped the bombshell.
‘When he initially said [my situation] wasn’t ideal… my stomach dropped because I came into this experiment and I couldn’t wait for the person at the end of the aisle to meet the greatest part about me, which was my son,’ she told Daily Mail Australia.
Despite the shock, Awhina said she gave Adrian time to mull it over, and he eventually started to come around.
‘I feel like it was a surprise and he needed time to process that information. And by the end of the night, things started to run a little smoother and he opened up a bit more. But, yeah, my initial reaction was a bit of dread… He quickly warmed up to me.’

Awhina made it clear early on that her son was her priority, and she expected Adrian to respect that.
‘When he reacted the way he did to the news about my son, I was thinking, okay, so maybe he’s never dated a single mum before. I wanted him to know that it is a big part of my life. So accepting me obviously comes with the acceptance that I am a mum and I have a son.’
When asked about the rest of their honeymoon experience, Awhina was tight-lipped, teasing fans to stay tuned.
‘I don’t know, you’re just gonna have to watch and find out. I haven’t seen yet. But PDA, I’m not sure about that.’
As for the burning question about how Adrian performed in the bedroom, Awhina cheekily dodged it.
‘Wouldn’t you like to know?’
Pressed further on whether the honeymoon or the bedroom was better, she answered coyly, ‘Does it look like that man’s good in the bedroom? Answer me that.’
The mother-of-one has been open about her physical attraction to Adrian during the experiment.
‘When he initially said it wasn’t ideal to me, yeah, my stomach dropped because I came into this experiment and I couldn’t wait for the person at the end of the aisle to meet the greatest part about me, which was my son,’ she told Daily Mail Australia
Awhina, who had never been a big reality TV fan, admitted she was captivated watching her own wedding unfold on screen.
‘It actually was really nice. I’m not someone who really gets into reality TV, but when I was watching it, I was telling my friends and family that were watching it with me to be quiet.
‘I wanted to really get in there. It was really beautiful.’
She confessed to being overwhelmed with nerves the moment she locked eyes with Adrian at the altar.
‘Oh yes, I remember that moment, immediately hiding my face because he was so cute. So when I [saw] him, the nerves really kicked in. So I was like, okay, anxiety’s kicking in. This man is way too good looking.’
Despite Adrian’s confidence, Awhina had her doubts about his claim that they were the second-most popular couple on the show.
‘Adrian said that? No way that man would call himself second to anyone. He would have said he was the main character and his back hurts from carrying the show, if anything.
‘But no, I’m not here to be the first, second, third, fourth or fifth character in the show, I’m here to find love.’
Contrary to rumours, Awhina denied that going on MAFS was her ultimate dream
Contrary to rumours, Awhina denied that going on MAFS was her ultimate dream.
‘I really wonder who spread that rumour because a dream come true usually entails that you dreamt about it for a long time. Now, I had just got out of a very long-term relationship prior to coming on the show.
‘Coming onto MAFS definitely wasn’t a dream come true, but getting married and finding my person, yeah, that’s what everyone dreams for, right?’
Reflecting on her Hens Night, Awhina admitted that the experience was overwhelming, but she made fast friends with Jamie Marinos.
‘I remember leaving the Hens thinking, I don’t feel like I chatted to anyone. But someone who did have a powerful impact on me that night was Jamie.
‘I recognised that there would be a friendship there. I’m a big character. I’m loud. I’m not everyone’s cup of tea. But I knew I would be Jamie’s and she’d be mine.’
As for what fans can expect from her at the infamous dinner parties, Awhina teased a different side of her.
‘A very quiet, demure person, who doesn’t speak up. I just listened and respond. Yeah. No wine throwing here,’ she laughed.

Married At First Sight continues Sunday at 7pm on Channel Nine
‘No, you’re gonna have to wait and watch and find out. The dinner parties are very explosive. And unfortunately, I was definitely a part of some of the action.’
Going into the experiment, Awhina admitted she had a naïve perspective of what the journey would be like.
‘Because I didn’t watch the show prior to coming on. You look at Married at First Sight, and you think you’re coming on, and you’re instantly walking into a marriage.
‘You’re like, “MAFS, great, I’m gonna meet my forever person. We’re just gonna go run off into the sunset together.”
‘And you feel like you’re gonna skip all the hard work where that’s not the case at all. You don’t just get married and it’s love at first sight. No. You’ve gotta build that connection and you’ve gotta do all the hard work, but you’ve gotta do it in a fast-track environment.
‘I was delusional in the sense that it would be easy, but it’s not. It’s like dating in the real world, you’ve gotta get to know that person and figure out whether or not you guys are compatible.’
When asked about the kind of date that would win her over, Awhina revealed she was all about personal touches.
‘I don’t know, I’m a real sucker for food trucks, and bakeries, and picnics, or someone who just sets something up and they’ve gone to all these little random food places, and they’ve got all my favourite treats in front of me.
‘Or if we’ve been dating for a little while, maybe if they’re going, like, I’d love to go on a date with them. Me and my son, that would be really beautiful.’
