A Los Angeles man was sentenced to prison on Friday for threatening to bomb the city’s FBI Field Office, prosecutors said.
Mark William Anten, 53, of Sun Valley, was convicted by a jury in June on two charges of two counts of threats by interstate communication. He was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison by United States District Judge Wesley L. Hsu.
According to the Department of Justice, Anten sent a series of threatening emails to the FBI between July and December in 2023. In those emails, he ultimately threatened to bomb the office in Westwood twice.
Those emails included references to Theodore John Kaczynski, the “Unabomber.” Between 1978 and 1995, Kaczynski killed three people and injured almost two dozen more in a series of bombings. He died in federal prison last June.
Anten was interviewed by two FBI agents in front of his home in November 2023, where he was told to stop contacting the agency. Just weeks later he sent another email to agents, writing “I AM THE UNABOMBER” and “I WILL UNABOMB THE LOS ANGELES FBI HQ.”
The next day, he wrote “I can go on a mass murder spree. In fact it would be very explainable by your actions.” He ended the email by saying, “[y]ou ain’t getting away with this one,” and signed it, “SuperMax or Death.”
He attached a screenshot of an internet search reading “how to make a dirty bomb.”
Anten visited the L.A. FBI Field Office later that day, which was confirmed by surveillance footage.
