MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — A Silver Spring man will serve decades behind bars for the murder of 20-year-old Walter Woods, nearly two years ago, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office.
On Tuesday, Feb. 18, a Montgomery County judge sentenced 23-year-old Javier Reyes to 50 years in prison with 30 years to serve.
Reyes’ sentence comes after he was convicted of second-degree murder and use of a handgun in a crime of violence in December.
An investigation by the Montgomery County Department of Police revealed that in March 2023, Reyes and Woods met at a park on Hampshire Green Lane in Silver Spring to do a drug deal. On the night of March 7, police officers responded to a 911 call in the area, where they found Woods lying in the playground area unresponsive.
He had been shot four times and was taken to the hospital, where he died.
The Montgomery County judge ordered Reyes to serve five years of supervised probation once he is released.
