Police are investigating an attempted robbery that left a man with a gunshot wound in a parking lot at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa Sunday night.
Officers were called to the 3300 block of Bristol Street regarding the shooting around 8:40 p.m.
The unidentified victim was approached in the parking lot by the suspect and then shot in the leg, the Costa Mesa Police Department stated.
Video showed good Samaritans and first responders gathered around to help the victim, who was on the ground next to a white Lamborghini in the parking lot.
The man was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital with a non-life-threatening wound, police said.
A witness said the victim was involved in an altercation with the suspect.
“They looked like they were arguing. They just started fighting and then the guy just fell down to the floor,” the witness said.
No description was provided of the suspect, who fled the scene before police arrived.
The motive for the shooting is unknown. It was also unclear if the suspect and victim knew each other.
The incident comes less than three months after a woman was killed during a robbery at Newport Beach’s Fashion Island mall roughly 10 miles away.
And less than a month ago, carjackers targeted motorists in a Rolls-Royce and a Ferrari at the same mall.
