Authorities are offering a $30,000 reward for information on the suspects who shot and killed a man while he was riding his bike home in Los Angeles County.

On May 14, 2023, Jose Manuel Rangel, 32, was heading home after visiting his mother on Mother’s Day.

As he made his way across the Clara Street Bridge in Cudahy, he was suddenly approached by two male suspects.

It’s unclear what was said, but the situation quickly escalated into a physical altercation, according to investigators with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

During the fight, one suspect pulled out a handgun and shot Rangel several times, killing him. Both suspects fled the scene on foot, heading westbound on the bridge. They remain at large.

“He was a loving son, uncle, brother and friend,” said Sandra Rangel, a family member.

“When we got the call, it was unbelievable,” said Juan Carlos Ponce, the victim’s brother. “We just hope that if anybody has information regarding what’s happened, please speak up. Put us at peace. I miss my mother’s smile.”

Loved ones read a letter from the victim’s sister that said, “Jose saved my life many times, but I wasn’t there to save his life that day. So all I can do now is pray and have faith that someone would come forward.”

A press conference was held Thursday announcing a reward for information on the suspects responsible for the Rangel’s murder.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors authorized a $20,000 reward and the city of Cudahy contributed an additional $10,000.

The suspects are described as:

  • A Hispanic male, 25-30 years old, between 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall. Last seen wearing a blue hat, surgical mask, black shirt and dark-colored jeans
  • A Hispanic male, 25-30 years old, between 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall. Last seen wearing a black shirt and red shorts

“Homicide investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward,” LASD said. “Even the smallest detail could be crucial in bringing justice to Jose and his family.”

Anyone with information on the murder is encouraged to call the LASD’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500.
