A suspect is in custody after a passerby witnessed a suspected sexual assault of a woman at a popular Santa Clarita park overnight.

Authorities received a 911 call from the witness reporting the incident at Skyline Ranch Park around 11 p.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Molina said.

Arriving deputies located the male suspect, whose name and age have not been released, and took him into custody.

The unidentified victim was found on the ground near a picnic table and was taken to a local hospital in unknown condition.

Detectives are working to determine what led up to the incident, but Molina said that the victim appeared to be under the influence, so they have not been able to get her account. It remains unclear if the victim and suspect knew each other.

Officials will be conducting sexual assault forensics examinations on the victim and the suspect, Molina said.

Skyline Ranch Park opened to the community about a year ago. “I’m surprised that happened,” said Alfonso Girón, who lives in the area. “Hopefully it’s just this time … because this is a nice area,” he said.

The Sheriff’s Department is asking anyone with information about this incident or the attacker to come forward.
