A man being held in a holding cell at a Bronx police transit district station died of a drug overdose, police said.
The 44-year-old man was found unconscious and unresponsive in his cell at Transit District 11 headquarters near Yankee Stadium early Saturday morning, police said. He was rushed to Lincoln Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead of a drug overdose. The Medical Examiner will officially determine the cause of death, police said.
The victim had been arrested earlier when officers found him smoking at the 149th St. — Grand Concourse station. Officers then patted him down to find a stash of drugs on his person, a police source said.
He was charged with drug possession and violating local law, cops said.
According to sources, the man reportedly still had drugs hidden in his socks and underwear while in custody.
Police were withholding the victim’s identity until his family can be notified.
