Pennsylvania state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta was re-elected Saturday, June 14, 2025, as vice chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), following a re-vote prompted by internal party concerns over the original election process.
Kenyatta secured the position with 374.5 votes, capturing 99 percent of support from voting members. The re-vote came after the DNC rescinded an earlier election in which Kenyatta and activist David Hogg were elected vice chairs.
Hogg, who declined to run again, had sparked internal debate by signaling plans to challenge Democratic incumbents through his group, Leaders We Deserve. His comments and leaked audio of DNC Chair Ken Martin criticizing Hogg’s leadership added to tensions within the party.
“Malcolm Kenyatta has been a strong and effective leader as DNC Vice Chair. He has been committed to this work since day one,” said Martin following the vote.
The re-vote was initiated after Oklahoma Democratic National Committee member Kalyn Free raised concerns about the fairness of the initial election, arguing that the process disadvantaged female candidates. A second vice chair seat remains open, with three women in contention ahead of a Tuesday vote.
Kenyatta’s leadership style contrasts sharply with the disruption caused by David Hogg’s brief tenure. While Hogg’s energy and push for accountability have value, his approach threatened to fracture the party at a moment when coalition-building is crucial. Kenyatta, on the other hand, has proven he can balance progressive values with pragmatic politics.
