A significant portion of Topanga Canyon Boulevard will be closed through the Santa Monica Mountains for three days this week due to concerns about gusty winds leading to dangerous fire conditions, officials announced Monday.
“🚧🚧 Topanga Canyon Blvd (SR-27) will be CLOSED from 10 AM Tue. to 6 PM Fri., Jan. 7-10, in #Topanga due to Red Flag Warning fire danger,” Caltrans District 7 posted on X.
The roughly 11-mile full closure will be implemented between Mulholland Drive and Pacific Coast Highway in the unincorporated area of Topanga.
“Only residents and local business traffic will be allowed into the canyon,” Caltrans stated.
The closure comes as Southern California braces for several days of gusty Santa Ana winds that could reach speeds of 80 to 100 mph in some mountain locations, according to the National Weather Service.
In December, the Franklin Fire erupted in nearby Malibu amid similar conditions. The wildfire spread quickly before scorching more than 4,000 acres and destroying several homes.
Caltrans urged motorists to use alternate routes when traveling to their destination. Current traffic conditions and road closures can be viewed on Caltrans QuickMap.
Officials also noted that the closure schedule is subject to change pending weather conditions or other reasons.
