Paramedics and fire crews have blocked traffic in both directions southbound from J3 for Pilsworth on the M66 to J4 for the M60 and Simister Island.

It is not known yet when the roads will re-open but cops have warned disruption could continue into the morning and affect commuters.

A National Highways spokesperson said: “The M66 is closed southbound between J3 and M60/M62 J18 Simister Island. The northbound carriageway is closed within M60/M62 J18

“We are assisting Greater Manchester Police in responding to a collision.”

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: “We are currently responding to a serious collision on the M60.

“Road closures are in place on M60 between junctions 19 and 17 in both directions and M66 at Simister island in both directions.

“Heavy traffic should be expected on M62 westbound between junction 20 and 16.

“These closures are likely to be in place for some time whilst we conduct enquiries, and could impact those travelling to work and school tomorrow morning (Monday 17 November 2025).

“We appreciate this disruption is significant, but it is necessary for public safety. We are grateful for your cooperation and understanding.

“More information on the incident will be released once the full circumstances have been established.”
