A two-vehicle crash on the 405 Freeway killed a 72-year-old woman and a dog in West Los Angeles on Friday evening, officials confirmed.

The crash also left three people hospitalized – two of which are in critical condition – and shut down at least three lanes, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Around 8:40 p.m., Caltrans said in an X post that the number 5 and 6 northbound lanes would be closed for an estimated three hours due to the collision, asking drivers to proceed with caution.

In addition to the fatalities and injuries, LAFD also noted another dog was involved in the crash and ran away from the scene. As of Friday evening, it was still reported missing along the northbound 405 lanes.

The California Highway Patrol first reported the crash around 6:42 p.m. on the northbound 405 Freeway near Wilshire Boulevard.

Upon arrival, LAFD crews reported finding three patients, one of whom was trapped inside a car and required extrication.

In a 7:13 p.m. update, LAFD identified the hospitalized patients as an 80-year-old woman, a 66-year-old man, and a 60-year-old woman.

The 80-year-old and the 66-year-old were reported to be in critical condition, and the 60-year-old woman was in “fair” condition.

LAFD only identified the patient who was killed as a 72-year-old woman and did not provide any further details on the age, sex or breed of the dog.

This is a developing story, updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
