DRIVERS faced motorway mayhem today after a smash brought traffic on the M1 to a grinding halt.
Long queues remain on the northbound carriageway as two lanes are still closed between Junctions 34 and 35 in South Yorkshire.
Earlier this afternoon, South Yorkshire Police confirmed that both sides of the motorway had been closed for a time, causing standstill traffic.
Emergency services including “numerous ambulances, fire engines and police cars” were at the scene.
Traffic cameras captured dramatic scenes as an air ambulance landed onto the M1 motorway near Meadowhall at around 2:45 this afternoon.
The closure has sparked major travel chaos, leaving motorists stuck in standstill queues.
The collision came during strong wind and rain, making driving conditions challenging, and a 50mph speed limit was in place.
South Yorkshire Police said: “Please be aware that both carriageways of the M1 between junctions 34 and 35 are now fully reopen following a road traffic collision earlier.
“Please be aware that there is a lot of traffic on roads near the junctions.
“We would urge drivers to please avoid the area if they can and find alternatives routes of travel.”
