WASHINGTON (DC News Now) – On Friday, at Ida B. Wells Middle School, the Washington Spirit Women’s Soccer Team announced that five-time NBA champion Earvin “Magic” Johnson is joining the team’s ownership group.
Johnson arrived at the school with Washington Spirit owner Michele Kang around 2 p.m. Friday afternoon. The new Spirit investor had a chance to catch some of the young soccer players from the nonprofit DC Scores in action and then had a chance to speak with them.
“We have to do well in school,” Johnson said. “Not just on the field, but in school as well. Those grades also changed my life.”
Johnson is no stranger to investing in professional sports teams. He’s a partial owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Sparks, Major League Soccer’s LAFC and the Washington Commanders. He said investing in the Washington Spirit was an easy decision for him.
“When you think about women’s sports,” Johnson said. “It is exploding around the world. We witnessed that at the Olympics. We see that right now in our league. We see it both in soccer right now and in the WNBA right now. Women’s sports are on the rise, probably bigger than any other sport. So, when Michele called and we met, it was a no-brainer for me, and I’m just happy to be a Spirit owner.”
Johnson said in addition to investing in the team, he looks forward to investing in the D.C. community as a whole.
