National Highways warned drivers there is no estimated time for the busy stretch to re-open.

But the motorway operator confirmed traffic caught within the closure was gradually being released.

It said: “At 20:41 a serious collision involving a motorcyclist and a car occurred on the M40 in Buckinghamshire between J4 and J3.

“This has resulted in the carriageway being closed. Thames Valley Police remain in attendance to carry out a collision investigation.

“National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene to assist with traffic management.

“Traffic caught up within the closure is being released via the rear of the queue.”

M40 southbound diversion

  • Exit the M40 at J4 and at the roundabout, take the third exit onto the A404 towards High Wycombe
  • At the A404/A40 roundabout, continue on the A40 eastbound for approx. 3 miles towards Loudwater
  • Re-join the M40 at J3

A diversion is currently in place for traffic heading southbound on the M40.

Drivers have been urged to allow extra travel time or delay their journey.

It comes after the M11 was forced to close this morning after two vehicles crashed in separate incidents.

The southbound carriageway was closed between junctions J7 and J6 – with drivers warned of 30 minute delays to their journey.

A car and a van both crashed into the central reservation barrier, with the van flipping onto its side on the motorway near Stansted Airport.

The northbound carriageway was also closed until 7:30am due to the damage central reservation barrier making the lane unsafe.
