Netflix announced on Tuesday morning that Lonely Planet, its new romance from writer-director Susannah Grant (Unbelievable), is slated to premiere on the streamer on October 11, also unveiling a few first-look stills, which you can view above and below.
The film watches as a reclusive novelist arrives at a prestigious writer’s retreat in Morocco, hoping the remote setting will unlock her writer’s block. While there, she meets a young man — and what starts as an acquaintanceship evolves into an intoxicating, life-altering love affair.
Certainly, the May-December romance is on trend at the moment among storytellers. Filmmaker Todd Haynes took to Netflix last year with his dark comedy May December, which nabbed a number of Oscar and Golden Globe nominations after premiering at the Cannes Film Festival. Meanwhile, Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson chart the torrid affair between a high-powered CEO and her much younger intern in A24’s forthcoming Babygirl from Bodies Bodies Bodies helmer Halina Reijn, which bows out of Venice and is slated for release in theaters on Christmas Day.
Lonely Planet also stars Diana Silvers, Younès Boucif, Adriano Giannini and Rachida Brakni. Grant produced alongside Sarah Timberman and Liza Chasin for 3dot Productions, with Brendan Ferguson, Corinne Weber, and Margaret Chernin serving as executive producers. The film continues the creative partnership between Netflix and 3dot, which has thus far produced the streamer’s Anatomy of a Scandal, based on the book by Sarah Vaughan. It also reunites the company with Grant, who co-created Netflix’s Peabody Award-winning true crime miniseries Unbelievable, starring Toni Collette, Merritt Wever, and Kaitlyn Dever.
