The Houston area is under a Winter Storm Warning and Extreme Cold Warning.
HOUSTON — The Houston area is bracing for a winter storm, with freezing temperatures, precipitation and ice accumulations. The timing is Saturday night into Sunday with ice potentially being an issue through Monday morning.

Saturday 1:20 p.m.: Space Center Houston announced it’ll be closed Sunday | Latest closings
Saturday, 10 a.m.: As of 10 a.m. CT, flight disruptions are mounting nationwide as the winter storm affects air travel across the country, according to FlightAware.
Across the United States, airlines are reporting thousands of delays and cancellations:
- Total delays today: 11,581
- Delays within, into, or out of the U.S.: 1,321
- Total cancellations today: 3,788
- Cancellations within, into, or out of the U.S.: 3,470
Flight impacts are also being felt locally at Houston’s major airports.
William P. Hobby Airport (HOU):
- Total delays today: 10
- Total cancellations today: 50
George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH):
- Total delays today: 66
- Total cancellations today: 140
Passengers are encouraged to closely monitor their flight status as conditions continue to evolve throughout the day.
Saturday, 7 a.m.: In a statement released Saturday, the City of Houston said preparations are underway to protect critical infrastructure, open warming centers, and position police officers and firefighters to respond quickly to emergencies.
Because of the expected ice buildup and hazardous conditions, city officials are asking residents to stay off the roads.
“For that reason, I am asking Houstonians to stay off the roads beginning at midnight Saturday and plan to remain in a safe location until Monday morning. Ice buildup will create extremely dangerous driving conditions, and keeping roads clear is critical for first responders,” Mayor John Whitmire said.
Friday 9 p.m.: TxDOT shared that crews had prepared the Galveston Ferry with de-icing agents on roadways and decks.
Friday 7:30 p.m.: Houston Municipal Courts announced the courts would be closed Monday and resume Tuesday.
Friday 5:45 p.m.: MD Anderson is cancelling all outpatient appointments for Sunday, Jan. 25. There will be a delayed opening at all MD Anderson campuses on Monday, Jan. 26, with in-person patient appointments starting at noon. Inpatient operations will remain open. Affected patients are being contacted.
Friday 4:30 p.m.: Houston METRO is adjusting service during the winter storm. The adjustments can be found here.
Friday 4 p.m.: Early voting in the District 18 special election canceled for Sunday. Early voting open through 7 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday.
