One of the Big Bear bald eagle chicks just made a big leap.
While it was not immediately clear which of the two eaglets it was, one of them flew the nest and began soaring through the sky late Monday morning.
The departure took a second; after a few test flaps and wing spreading, the adventurous eaglet began its flight smoothly and quickly soared out of frame as the other watched.
The eaglets, Sunny and Gizmo, are likely both sisters, according to Friends of Big Bear Valley, which operates a live camera feed at their nest. Both had tried flying and successfully hovered for a few seconds on Saturday, the organization said.
Their nest is located near the top of a 145-foot Jeffrey pine tree within the San Bernardino National Forest.
