EXCLUSIVE: Add SK Global Entertainment, the independent studio behind hits like Anyone But You and Crazy Rich Asians, to the long list of entertainment and media companies impacted by layoffs in 2024.
Less than 20 employees were affected across multiple departments, sources tell Deadline. Like so many others, the company made the move to ensure the continued growth and success of its operations amidst continually strong economic headwinds, following the year of the double strike.
SK Global remains dedicated, we’re told, to creating premium content with cultural impact. All of its lines of business and current and upcoming productions will remain on track as staffing changes are implemented.
News of the layoffs follows word of others this month at the Film Academy, Fox Corp., Allen Media Group, Netflix, Disney and elsewhere.
SK Global saw major success last winter with Anyone But You, the critically acclaimed Sony rom-com starring Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney, which emerged as a sleeper hit at a worldwide gross exceeding $220 million. Thus far producing and financing over 100 features, dating back to its origins as Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, the company is also known for prestige dramas like Hell or High Water and The Place Beyond the Pines.
SK commenced production abroad on Reykjavik, a Cold War drama starring Jeff Daniels, Jared Harris & J.K. Simmons, in early October. Prior to that, they took to Netflix with acclaimed docuseries Thai Cave Rescue and inspirational documentary feature Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa.
