COLLEGE PARK, Md. (DC News Now) — On Saturday in College Park, the Laurel boys basketball team beat Whitman, 68-53 in the MPSSAA 4A final — for the Spartans, it’s their first state title victory since 1980.
“It’s not me individually, it takes a community. These guys like they said, they wanted it from four years ago,” Laurel boys basketball head coach Eric Hines said. “They had an idea and dream and they believed it and they chased that dream. That’s what we said. Chase that dream. And that’s what they did.”
Laurel dominated the game from late in the first quarter through the end. Amadou Kalonga, Jermaine Taylor and Christian Brown combined for 55 points for the Spartans. Kalonga led all scorers with 24 points.
“I walked in my coach’s office my freshman year and I told him all my goals and every year we took a step,” Taylor told DC News Now. “And finally our final year of playing high school basketball together we all did it.”
