The Lake Fire near Hesperia continues to rage with little containment Sunday morning.

Per the latest update from Cal Fire at 7:30 a.m., the blaze stood at 478 acres and ten percent containment. It was first reported near Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area just before 4 p.m. Saturday.

A mandatory evacuation order has been issued for the area south of the 138 Freeway between the 15 and 173 freeways. Portions of the 15, the busiest freeway in the region, will be affected due to fire behavior and visibility concerns, according to officials.

There is also an evacuation warning in place for the area north of the 138, west of the 173 and east of Summit Valley Road.

“Weather conditions are playing a significant role in fire activity,” Cal Fire said in the Lake Fire situation summary on Saturday night, explaining that the evening’s gusty winds gradually died down as relative humidity rose, which helped to mitigate fire behavior.

The forecast does not indicate that firefighting conditions will be getting better.

“Conditions will dry out again on Sunday with humidity dropping back to 20 percent and winds gusting up to 25 miles per hour in the afternoon,” the situation summary said. “Monday is forecast to bring stronger wind gusts exceeding 30 miles per hour, which could challenge suppression efforts.”

The origin of the Lake Fire is not known. It did not appear to be immediately threatening any structures, and no injuries have been reported.

According to Cal Fire, more than 520 personnel, three helicopters and 54 fire engines have been dispatched to the area near Silverwood Lake, which is a popular spot for recreation and camping in the San Bernardino mountains. Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area will remain closed to the public as the fire continues to burn, and those who must travel through the region are asked to consult official websites for road conditions and prepare in case warnings and evacuations change.

Also breaking out in the Inland Empire on Saturday was the Smiley Fire near Redlands, which reached 83 acres before crews started making significant containment progress.
