Lady Gaga will perform what should be a huge free concert on Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach on May 3, the singer confirmed on social media today.
Gaga, whose new album Mayhem is set for a March 7 release, wrote on Instagram this morning, “It’s a great honor to be asked to sing for Rio — for my whole career the fans in Brazil have been part of the lifeblood of the little monsters. I’ve been dying to come perform for you for years and was heartbroken when I had to cancel years ago because I was hospitalized. Your understanding that I needed that time to heal meant the world to me. I am now coming back and I feel better than ever and am working so hard to make sure this show is one you will never forget. Get ready for MAYHEM on the beach.”
The singer canceled a 2017 Rock in Rio performance due to medical reasons.
The Gaga concert on the beach follows last year’s Madonna concert, which reportedly drew an estimated 1.6 million people to Copacabana Beach. Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes, who has been hinting about the show since December but said he had signed an NDA to prevent info leaks, has pledged to stage a major international concert on the beach every May as part of the economy-boosting “Celebration May” initiative.
According to the Associated Press, Paes posted on social media today, “I don’t have tickets for the Lady Gaga show! It’s open and free!”
