Since 2022, the French bulldog has been the most popular dog breed in America, according to the American Kennel Club.
So, do Angelenos feel the same way? Yes, yes they do.
The AKC released their findings of the most popular dog breeds of 2024, and Los Angeles, like the rest of the U.S., seems to have a strong affection for Frenchies.
In fact, 2024 was the eighth year in a row that the French bulldog topped the list of Angelenos’ favorite dog breed, and experts know exactly why.
“In a city like Los Angeles, it’s no wonder the Frenchie has remained popular for so many years,” said AKC Executive Secretary Gina DiNardo. “They’re the perfect companion breed and thrive in big cities.”

Miami and Houston’s most popular dog was also the Frenchie.
The French bulldog’s popularity has exploded in recent years; according to the AKC, they were the country’s 14th most popular breed in 2012 and shot up to number two in 2021 before claiming the top spot in 2022, where they have remained ever since. They took the crown from the Labrador Retriever, which was the most popular dog in America for 31 years.
Rounding out the top four dog breeds for L.A. are the bulldog, golden retriever, German shepherd and Labrador retriever.
Those breeds closely align with America’s favorite breeds:
- French bulldog
- Labrador retriever
- Golden retriever
- German shepherd
- Poodle
- Dachshund
- Beagle
- Rottweiler
- Bulldog
- German shorthaired pointer
The least popular dog of 2024, according to the American Kennel Club, was the English foxhound, which finished in 201st place.
AKC officials noted that a breed’s popularity does not determine how it will fit in a home. Prospective dog owners are encouraged to research and find the right breed that will fit their lifestyle.
French bulldog owners in L.A. have been victim to several dog thefts in the past, including a brazen incident in January 2024 where a woman jumped on the front of a vehicle belonging to thieves who stole her Frenchie and another where a victim had her pooch stolen at gunpoint while on a walk.
