Officers in Reseda shot and killed a man reportedly armed with a handgun that fired on a police helicopter Sunday evening.
While an investigation into the deadly police shooting is in its beginning stages, officials with the Los Angeles Police Department said that officers responded to reports of an assault with a deadly weapon and a “suspect armed with a handgun” just before 6:30 p.m. in the 6400 block of Reseda Boulevard.
Arriving officers spotted the man, described only as a male adult, as he ran into an apartment complex on Victory Boulevard, near the intersection of Reseda Boulevard.
“An LAPD airship was overhead and reported that the suspect appeared to fire his handgun at this airship,” officials said. “At this point in the investigation, it doesn’t appear the airship was struck by the suspect’s gunfire.”
Police reportedly confronted the man in the rear alley of the apartment complex and opened fire, striking him. He was immediately taken into custody.
Medical personnel with the L.A. Fire Department responded to the scene and declared the man dead.
“The suspect’s handgun was recovered at the scene and will be booked as evidence,” officials added.
Officials stressed that the incident, in which no citizens or officers were injured, is in the early stages of an investigation, with detectives reviewing video and physical evidence.
The area of Reseda and Victory boulevards was expected to be impacted for several hours due to the police activity.
