The community of Baldwin Park is holding a procession Tuesday evening to honor fallen Baldwin Park Police Department Officer Samuel Riveros, killed in the line of duty over the weekend, which KTLA will stream live.
Riveros, 43, was shot and killed after officers were dispatched to the 4200 block of Filhurst Avenue on reports of a man with a rifle Saturday at around 7:15 p.m.
Once they arrived, deputies located Darius Wong, a father of two daughters, suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body. He was transported to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead. Authorities said Wong had just parked his car when he was shot.
When officers arrived, the gunman, now identified as 22-year-old Eduardo Roberto Medina-Berumen, opened fire, killing Riveros and wounding another officer, who was taken to a nearby hospital and survived.
Medina-Berumen has since been charged by the L.A. County DA’s Office with two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder for reportedly firing shots at other Baldwin Park officers.
“Sam was a dedicated officer who represented our department with dignity and honor,” said Baldwin Park Police Chief Robert A. López. “In the face of danger, Sam selflessly put the safety of others before his own and gave his life doing so. We will never forget Sam and we will lean on one another in our shared grief as we move forward.”
KTLA will livestream Tuesday evening’s procession which will travel from Los Angeles to Forest Lawn Funeral Home in Covina via the northbound 605 Freeway to eastbound Ramona Boulevard to Pacific Avenue and onto the 10 Freeway.
Sky5 will be over the somber event in remembrance of Officer Samuel Riveros at approximately 7:45 p.m.
Those who would like to show their support are encouraged to safely line up along the route. Commuters are advised of possible traffic delays during this time and should plan travel accordingly.
“We deeply appreciate the community’s support as we honor the life, service and sacrifice of Officer Samuel Riveros,” officials said.
