No. 7 Tennessee (33-9, 8-6 SEC) defeated No. 1 Texas (39-4, 11-3 SEC), 3-1, Saturday at Fred and Charlene McCombs Field in Austin, Texas.
With the victory, Tennessee evened the three-game series.
Karlyn Pickens, the two-time reigning SEC and NFCA Pitcher of the Week, pitched a complete game for the Lady Vols. She allowed one run, four hits and three walks, while recording eight strikeouts. Pickens, who pitched one inning in Friday’s 3-0 loss to the Longhorns, totaled 109 pitches, including 72 strikes.
Tennessee, which recorded five hits in the contest, led 2-0, in the first inning, after first baseman McKenna Gibson hit a two-run home run, her 10th of the season. She went 1-for-3, hitting one home run. Gibson recorded one RBI and scored one run.
Tennessee right fielder Gabby Leach went 2-for-3 and recorded a scoring single in the seventh inning.
The Longhorns scored in the fourth inning when designated player Katie Cimusz hit a RBI single.
Game No. 3 of the series is scheduled for Sunday in Austin. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. EDT and the contest will be streamed on SEC Network+.
