New York has a new three Michelin star restaurant for the first time in 12 years.
Jungsik New York in Tribeca was awarded its third Michelin star at a ceremony Monday night. The high-end Korean establishment opened its doors in 2011 and quickly earned its first Michelin star in 2012 and its second in 2013.
But this year, Jungsik elevated its offerings to a new level and earned the highest possible rating from the restaurant guide, becoming the first Korean eatery in the U.S. to do so.
“This is cooking that is highly original, impeccably executed and enormously satisfying; a meal that makes you involuntarily nod to yourself while you’re eating,” the Michelin review reads.
Tables at Jungsik are unsurprisingly tough to get, and the signature tasting menu starts at $295 per person. The restaurant is named after chef and owner Jungsik Yim, who’s assisted by executive chef Daeik Kim.
“The tasting menu unfolds to reveal delights such as slivers of raw striped jack with white kimchi and chilled fish bone broth; gorgeously crisped octopus with gochujang aioli; and dry-aged Arctic char in a pool of kimchi and red curry sauce,” the review continues.
Jungsik also has a location in Seoul, which boasts two Michelin stars. Several of its beloved creations have made their way to the menu in NYC.
“The execution has been elevated, product quality and sauce work are excellent, presentations are stimulating, and the flavors are refined, clear and harmonious,” one Michelin inspector said. “It’s very impressive.”
There are only 14 restaurants throughout the U.S. that have earned three Michelin stars, five of which are now located in New York. Eleven Madison Park, Le Bernardin, Masa and Per Se round out the other four. No restaurants had joined that esteemed group since Eleven Madison Park earned its third star in 2012.
