(NewsNation) — It’s time to ask the rhetorical question that Hank Williams Jr. posed for so many years on Monday nights: Are you ready for some football? Super Bowl winning quarterback Joe Theismann says he’s ready, especially when it comes to his old position.
“The excitement for me is the youth that’s going to be on the field at the quarterback position,” Theismann told “NewsNation Prime.” “You have all these young quarterbacks coming in and having a chance to be able to play.”
Theismann is especially focused on the top two picks in this year’s college draft: USC quarterback Caleb Williams, who went to the Chicago Bears, and LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels, who was chosen by Theismann’s old team, the Washington Commanders.
“They’re both very, very smart. They’re both very, very athletic. They both bring a dimension to the game that I think is evolving,” he said – adding that both young men came out of high-profile programs and are used to intense media attention and pressure.
“I don’t think the situation’s going to be that difficult for them,” he said.
On the other end of the age spectrum, Theismann says he’ll be paying attention to Aaron Rogers, whose inaugural season with the New York Jets ended after just four play when he tore his ACL.
“Is he going to be what he was in the past? He’s 40 years old, but right now that means absolutely nothing. He’s kept himself in great shape.
“He could have walked away last year. He could have not wanted to train as hard as he did to get back. I think he looked at the Jets and said, ‘you know what? It’s a really good defense.’ People have asked me all the time: what’s the most important asset a quarterback can possess? It’s a great defense. He has one in New York.”
Theismann also believes that the Kansas City Chiefs will become the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls. History is definitely not on the Chiefs’ side. Not only has no team won three straight, the eight times that won back-to-back championships all failed to return to the Super Bowl the following year.
But Theismann says the Chiefs can do it thanks to their quarterback and coach.
“I think Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback in football. He can make things happen when they go awry. And Andy Reid and he have developed a tremendous relationship. I think they can do it.”
