Jim Carrey has candidly revealed the reason he took on a role in new film Sonic the Hedgehog 3 – after previously announcing his retirement.
The actor, 62, said in 2022 he wouldn’t do anymore films claiming Sonic 2 was his final project.
But in February this year it was revealed the star – who is thought to be worth £160 million – would be returning for the third film which also stars Ben Schwartz, Idris Elba, Keanu Reeves and Colleen O’Shaughnessey.
Speaking on the red carpet last night an interviewer from the Associated Press said to him: ‘You said in a past interview that you’d come back if you got a script written in gold ink written by angels…?’
As he began to laugh he replied saying: ‘That might’ve been hyperbole, yeah. I came back to this universe because I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch.
‘And you know, I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly.’

The star is known for his roles in The Mask, The Grinch and Dumb and Dumber.
In 2022 he said of leaving acting behind: ‘Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious.
‘I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas and I really love my spiritual life and I feel like – and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists – I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough,’
The Sonic series has been one of the most lucrative projects of his career, with the first two films grossing a combined $725m (£568m) worldwide.
Sonic The Hedgehog is back on the big screen with another hair-raising adventure to unwrap just in time for Christmas.
It sees the return of everyone’s favourite blue hedgehog, along with his faithful sidekicks, Knuckles and Tails, as the dynamic trio experience their most thrilling adventure yet.
This time Team Sonic reunites against mysterious villain Shadow, who’s been in a state of suspended animation for decades but is now about to be unleashed – and, yes, he wants revenge.
Shadow’s impressive suite of superpowers – including teleportation and awesome strength – could not only defeat Sonic and his friends, but could put the planet’s future in jeopardy.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is once again led by an all-star cast – with fan favourite Ben taking on the role of Sonic for a third time.
The US funnyman brings Sonic to life with his immaculate comic timing and extraordinary voice.
In May this year Jim marked down the price of his Los Angeles estate for the third time since he listed the property for sale over a year before.
The comedian has lived in the 12,700 sq. ft. home for over 30 years and first put his home on the market with a ticket price of a whopping $28.9 million back in February 2023.
Two months after listing the property, he cut the price to $27 million, and in October 2023, he reduced that number to $24 million.
And in May 2024, the Truman Show actor slashed the price to $21.9 million — bringing the total discount to $7 million.
Despite the massive price cut, he purchased the home three decades ago for $3.8 million and will still be taking home a considerable profit.
He purchased the lavish estate, which boasts a tennis court and an infrared sauna, in 1994.
When he first listed his home for sale in February, he told The New York Post that he was ready for ‘changes’ in his life.
‘For three decades it’s been a sanctuary for me, but I don’t spend a lot of time there now and I want someone else to enjoy it like I have,’ he told the outlet in a statement.
‘Cha cha cha cha … Changes!’ he added as he referenced the iconic David Bowie song.

He also previously told the The Wall Street Journal that the house was ‘a place of enchantment and inspiration’ for him for over ’30 very creative and prosperous years.’
‘Every night the owls sang me lullabies and every morning I sipped my cup of joe with the hawks and hummingbirds, under a giant grandfather pine,’ he said.
The single family, one-story home is located in the upscale Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles and features five bedrooms, six full bathrooms, and three half baths.
The Mask alum also enjoyed playing on the tennis court, swimming in the waterfall pool and meditating on an outdoor treetop platform on the spacious property, which covers over two acres.
