A big rig carrying macadamia nut oil overturned and caught fire Wednesday night, causing an hourslong lane closure on the 91 Freeway in Long Beach that continues into Thursday morning.
The semi initially jackknifed in lanes shortly before 8 p.m. Wednesday on the eastbound side of the freeway near Long Beach Boulevard.
The truck separated from the trailer and began leaking fuel, eventually igniting, causing a portion of the vehicle to burn.
It was unclear if the truck driver was injured in the crash.
The incident prompted officials to issue a SigAlert for the closure of all eastbound lanes, which stayed in effect for several hours.
Crews finally managed to get the HOV lane open around 11 p.m. and then reopened another lane just before 4 a.m. Thursday. However, several lanes remained closed as the morning commute approached.
It was unclear how long the investigation and cleanup would continue.
