A new Israeli-Mediterranean bakery, Tatte, opened its first Anne Arundel County location on Wednesday.
The bakery was started by Tzurit Or, a former film producer turned self-taught pastry chef, according to the Tatte website. Headquartered in Boston, the business began in 2007 selling Or’s items at a farmers market. Of its 40 locations, more than half are located in Massachusetts, with 16 in the Washington, D.C., metro area. The first D.C. location opened in 2020 and has expanded into Maryland and Virginia over the past three years.
Tatte, pronounced similarly like “latte,” is Hebrew for grandmother. The bakery’s name is rooted in Or’s family love for baking, according to its website. The name was inspired by Or’s then-18-month-old daughter pointing to a picture of her grandmother saying “Tatte, Tatte.”
The bakery in the Annapolis Town Center, just across from Gabby & Summer Classics furniture store, is the first in Anne Arundel County. The bakery offers an assortment of pastries, desserts, pitas and coffee. It’s also equipped with a full-service kitchen, offering sandwiches, salads and soups, in addition to a variety of Mediterranean dishes such as couscous bowls.
“A lot of our menu [is] inspired by like, Middle Eastern, Eastern European and Mediterranean dishes,” said William Rauch, the store’s general manager.
Rauch, 22, has worked as a general manager since 2023. He moved to D.C. from North Carolina after visiting a Tatte location in D.C. with his parents.
“I was like ‘This is gorgeous.’ I had been interested in kind of wanting to move up here, so I figured I would just apply, just to give it a go, and I ended up getting a job offer. And so that kind of brought me here,” he said.
Rauch moved to the Annapolis area this year after hearing a new location was opening soon. He described the opportunity as “kind of perfect” knowing he would be close to family.
