A death investigation has been opened following the death of an off-duty officer Thursday morning within the 18th District police station, Chicago police said.
According to a statement released Thursday morning on the officer’s death, Chicago police acknowledged the officer’s death happened within the 18th district police station and said detectives were investigating.
“Our officers are human, and we cannot forget that they face the same challenges as everyone else while balancing the difficulties that come with being a police officer,” the statement said.
Officials said the Near North station will be closed as detectives continue their investigation. Service calls to the station will be handled by nearby stations, police said.
The identification of the off-duty officer was not released.
