A man accused of domestic violence and two Riverside County Sheriff’s deputies were hospitalized after a courtroom brawl on Friday.
Ryan James Chalfant, 31, fought the two deputies after a judge ordered him taken into custody and held in lieu of $1 million bail, the Press-Enterprise reports.
He is facing multiple felony charges, including two counts of inflicting corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant with a prior conviction in the past seven years, one count of making criminal threats and one count of false imprisonment, the Press-Enterprise reports, citing Superior Court records.
Chalfant had been free on $50,000 bail and was expected to enter a plea on Friday, but instead, Judge Jennifer Gerard ordered him to be arrested and held in lieu of $1 million bail.
“When deputies attempted to take the male into custody, he resisted arrest,” a RCSD spokesperson told the outlet. “Deputies ultimately detained the suspect.”
Officials have not detailed the exact injuries sustained by the three, though all are expected to fully recover.
The arraignment was rescheduled for Tuesday.
