Trust in our institutions is plummeting across the board, including government, business, and education. In a major Gallup poll, only 27 percent of Americans report feeling either a great deal or quite a lot of confidence in government’s fundamental offices and agencies, with the presidency registering just 23 percent and Congress a remarkable 7 percent. In a democratic nation, dependent on broad-based support for our constitutional order, this deterioration seems at least problematic and likely unsustainable.
