HUNDREDS of drivers have been trapped in freezing conditions on the M2 after a “serious” collision.
A pedestrian and HGV were involved in the crash that sparked travel chaos along a stretch of motorway in Kent tonight.
The incident unfolded on the eastbound carriageway between Junction 5, Sittingbourne, and Junction 6, Faversham, at around 8pm.
Hundreds of drivers have been trapped in the area overnight as temperatures plunge below freezing.
The road closure is still in place as investigators continue to examine the scene.
National Highways is working with Kent Police to set up diversion routes and help stranded drivers without adequate supplies or heating.
Drivers have been warned to avoid the area.
The eastbound M2 remains closed between Junctions 5 and 6, and there is no current estimate for when the road will reopen.
One motorist said: “We’ve been stuck here for hours with no updates. It’s freezing, and there’s no way to leave.”
Anyone with information about the collision has been urged to contact Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit.
A Kent Police spokesperson said: “Drivers are warned of significant delays on the M2 following a serious collision involving a pedestrian on the coastbound carriageway.
“The collision happened at around 8.10pm on Wednesday 20 November, between junction 5 near Stockbury and junction 6 for Faversham.
“Police and other emergency services are at the scene and the coastbound carriageway is expected to remain closed for several hours.
“Motorists are advised to plan alternative routes and are urged to check for travel updates on the Highways website.”
A National Highways spokesperson added: “The #M2 in #Kent is closed eastbound between J5 near #Stockbury to J6 #Faversham.
“This is due to a serious collision between a lorry and a pedestrian.
