Novi pitcher Uli Fernsler is practically unbeatable for most high school baseball teams.
The only chance it seems, particularly early in the season when he’s on a pitch count, is to wait him out until the Wildcats go to their bullpen.
For the second week in a row, Fernsler’s departure allowed a Livingston County team to rally for a victory over Novi.
Trailing 7-1 after five innings, Howell stormed back Monday against three Novi relievers to win 8-7.
As was the case when Hartland beat Novi 4-3 five days earlier, a bases-loaded walk ended a walk-off victory for the Highlanders.
Howell’s seventh-inning rally began after the first two hitters were retired. Daniel Hampton hit a two-run triple to make it 7-5 and he scored on a passed ball to cut the lead to 7-6. Duncan Gray walked with the bases loaded to tie the score and Brady Hamilton walked to end the game.
Neko Hall’s two-run two-out single in the sixth started the rally.
Fernsler, who signed with Texas Christian but could be a Major League Baseball draft pick this year, threw strikes on 54 of 61 pitches through five innings. The top-ranked senior pitcher in Michigan, Fernsler struck out 11 batters while allowing two hits and no walks.
As he did against Hartland, Fernsler was removed while on an early-season pitch count. He came out after throwing 63 pitches in 4⅓ innings against the Eagles. Hartland came back from 2-0 down to win that game.
“Facing a top prospect like Uli, we knew it was going to be hard to score runs against him,” Howell coach Matt Hunt said. “We just knew we had to trust the process and keep grinding. I’m proud of our guys for never giving up. Our guys had some great at-bats and passed it on and believed in their ability.”
Howell is 6-2-1, averaging 7.7 runs per game.
“We’ve played well, but we can clean up some things,” Hunt said. “Our bats have been hot. Our pitching’s been pretty good. If we can clean up some things defensively, we’ll be strong.”
