(NewsNation) — Christmas will be extra challenging this year for those still struggling to recover from Hurricane Helene.
Many are still without proper homes and basic necessities after the category 4 storm ripped through North Carolina in September.
NewsNation’s Brian Entin spoke with a family of four living in a small RV and shed.
The family put up Christmas lights, but did not have enough gas in their generator to turn them on. But that didn’t dampen their holiday spirit.
There are glimmers of hope for many in the community.
Christmas decorations have been put out on Hurricane debris and one resident decorated a massive Christmas tree in the center of the devastation. He turns the lights on at sunset every night, which he says brings hope.
Neighbors have come together to support each other through the holidays like one resident who is providing sheds to families who need shelter.
