MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — Three people and a dog were displaced after a fire erupted at a house in Takoma Park on Sunday night, according to the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS).
In a post on X at 5:49 p.m., Pete Piringer with MCFRS said firefighters were responding to a fire in the basement of a single-family home in the 100 block of Elm Avenue near Hickory Avenue.
A short time later, Piringer said that 50 firefighters were on the scene with heavy smoke conditions. Crews from the Potomac Electric Power Company (PEPCO) also responded as fire officials said the fire was ‘likely electrical in nature.”
In an update at 7:20 p.m., firefighters had extinguished the flames. Responders said the electrical fire was likely in the walls and floors; however, they noted excessive clutter throughout the home.
Responders evaluated one person and one dog, but no one was injured. Police in the area said Elm Avenue between Pine Avenue and Hickory Avenue was closed to traffic as crews managed the fire, which left “significant damage” to the home.
