THIS is the terrifying moment a cable car detaches and hurtles down the side of a Swiss mountain, killing one sole passenger.
Horrifying footage shows the gondola tumbling down the mountain, flipping over several times.
A separate clip shows emergency services administering CPR to the victim as concerned holidaymakers watch on from a distance.
Harrowing images later showed the wreckage lying in a heap at the bottom of the slope, bent out of recognition.
In the aftermath of the crash, a rescue helicopter rushed to the scene while fellow skiers were painstakingly evacuated from the other gondolas.
“It just came off the cable and started rolling,” a witness said.
“There was a strong wind. Then there was a jerk, and the cable moved.
“Finally the cable crashed.”
According to reports, there was only one person in the carriage at the time of the incident.
“They tried to resuscitate them for around 30 minutes”, the witness added.
The unnamed individual was rushed to a nearby hospital but despite doctors’ best efforts, they succumbed to their injuries.
Prior to the incident, the victim was allowed to board the gondola despite strong winds battering the region.
Gusts exceeding 80 kilometres per hour were recorded in some places.
Despite the adverse conditions, this cable car, along with many others, was still allowed to operate.
It comes after six people were injured after a cable car slammed into a station barrier in Italy in December.
According to reports, the horror crash took place at the Monte Moro mountain station of Macugnaga cable car.
It is believed the crash occurred because the gondola arrived at the station too quickly.
Those injured were treated by on-site medics, but were later transported to a local hospital via air ambulance.
Around one hundred people were also left stranded following the incident.
Only a week prior a tourist died on a ski lift in Montenegro after the chair suddenly came loose and slid 230ft backwards, smashing into the seat behind.
A 34-year-old German man fell from the lift and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The fatal accident happened at the Savin Kuk resort, near the mountain town of Žabljak.
Authorities said a full technical examination of the lift would be carried out.
