A hit-and-run driver remains at large after ramming into a group of bicyclists in Boyle Heights.
The incident occurred on Feb. 25 when around 15 bicyclists were handing out red cards near Mariachi Plaza during a planned event.
A red card informs immigrants of their rights and how to exercise them when interacting with immigration authorities.
Shortly before 8 p.m., surveillance video captured the moment a female driver approached the group and began knocking down the riders from behind.
“We were struck by a woman in a car,” recalled a bicyclist who did not wish to be identified. “One minute, I’m on my bike and the next minute, I’m on the pavement.”
At least four riders were hit and one victim was flung onto the suspect’s windshield. Other riders threw their bikes at the car to stop the driver, but the woman continued plowing through the group.
“I remember looking up and I saw the side of her car just flying by my head,” the victim said. “Two of the riders can describe her as a white woman with a shaved head. They said she seemed to be on her cell phone and she looked pretty irate.”
The suspect fled the scene and left the riders with moderate to serious injuries.
“The most injured rider, he was taken to the emergency room,” the victim said. “He suffered head trauma and bleeding. He was so in shock, he didn’t even know what happened. I’m having trouble walking. My knee is very injured. Another girl, she couldn’t feel her left arm.”
The victims filed a police report and were able to capture a clear image of the woman’s vehicle. Her car is believed to be a 2016 four-door Kia sedan with the license plate number 8GAN606.
The bicyclists said they’re unsure whether the hit-and-run was a targeted attack, but hope the suspect is caught soon.
“I understand that people that people have places to go, but there’s no need for angry drivers,” the victim said. “Especially when we’re trying to do something healthy like riding a bike. We weren’t disobeying any laws. We were obeying all the bike laws. We had people in safety vests.”
