CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — Donald Trump was elected the 47th president of the United States early Wednesday morning, making it the second time a president has served non-consecutive terms.
The Associated Press called the national race around 4:30 a.m. with a win in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin getting him the 270 electoral votes necessary to win the presidential race against Democratic challenger Vice President Kamala Harris.
The race was called immediately after the polls closed in West Virginia at 7:30 p.m. This call was alongside other states seen as safe for their parties, like Indiana and Kentucky for Trump, and Vermont for Harris.
The majority of people in every West Virginia county voted for Trump, with some seeing more than 80% of their votes going to the Republican candidate, the Secretary of State’s website shows.
It was a little closer in the state’s three biggest counties, according to the Secretary of State’s website. In Kanawha County, Trump won 57.69% of the vote; in Cabell, Trump won 59.99%; and in Monongalia, Trump won 50.88% to Harris’ 46.46%.

Republicans swept many of West Virginia’s biggest races, including Attorney General Patrick Morrisey beating Huntington Mayor Steve Williams for the governorship, and Gov. Jim Justice flipping a U.S. Senate seat currently held by Sen. Joe Manchin (I).
That seat had been held by Democrats since the 1950s when Robert C. Byrd was elected in 1958. Sen. Byrd died in office in 2010, and then-Gov. Joe Manchin would fill his seat with Sen. Carte Goodwin (D). He served until Manchin was elected to the Senate that same year.
