(NewsNation) — Full health care funding for 9/11 first responders has been secured through 2040 as part of this year’s appropriations bill.
The funding comes months after President Donald Trump gutted the World Trade Center Health Program, which is meant to help people suffering from health issues in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said in a statement the inclusion of the funding will allow responders and survivors to continue “receiving the care they deserve.”
“We have seen firsthand the toll that uncertainty and funding gaps take on our 9/11 heroes … I have always said I will not rest until every 9/11 hero knows that when they need care, that care will be there for them, and fully funding this program helps ensure that promise is kept,” Schumer continued.
The World Trade Center Health Program was enacted in 2011, with programs scheduled to run through 2090.
