BRANDYWINE, Md. (DC News Now) — After starting the year 6-1, Gwynn Park Yellowjacket’s season will come to a halt early.
Gwynn Park’s football team is facing forfeiture from the Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) due to a rules violation, leaving the rest of their scheduled games to end in losses.
Gwynn Park’s head coach, Danny Hayes, will also be removed for the remainder of the season after he has couched the Yellowjackets for 25 years.
According to PGCPS, Gwynn Park had a player “who did not meet eligibility requirements.”
A letter was sent out to players and families last week from Gwynn Park’s Principal Naima Hopkins-Vinson.
“The integrity of our program is of utmost importance, and we take full responsibility for this oversight,” Vinson stated in the letter. “We are committed to ensuring that all future participation adheres to PGCPS and MPSSAA regulations.”
As Gwynn Park looks toward next season, it is unknown if Hayes can return to the program or not.
